Samish

The Samish Indian Nation is governed by a seven member Tribal Council elected to oversee the welfare and resources of the Tribe; its constitution, economic development, policies, legislation, enrollment, and justice. A General Council, all voting age members, maintains active participation in both the governance responsibilities and cultural gatherings of the Tribe. Today the leaders of the Tribe move both in the traditional Samish ways and use the tools of the modern day world.

• The mission and vision of the Chelángen Department is to create a cohesive tribal community with strong cultural ties while preserving, promoting, and protecting our traditions, culture, and language.

• To see that every tribal member can access housing that meets their individual needs and is free from any form of discrimination.

• The mission of the education program is to promote educational programs that foster the preservation of Samish culture and traditions and instill a desire for lifelong learning in all Samish tribal members.

Elders [17]

• Our S7elálexw (old people) have always been the holders of wisdom and teachers of the generations to come. They are our most valuable resource. Our program works hard to help them continue sharing their gifts.

Social Services [18]

• The mission of the Samish Social Services Department is to empower families and individuals toward obtaining self-sufficiency and improving their well-being through the cooperation of tribal programs, of the community, and the cooperation of other service providers.

• The Samish Health Department includes Purchased & Referred Care (formerly Contract Health) and Public Health & Diabetes. Both departments offer a range of services to assist with the health & wellness needs of Samish Tribal Members.

• Purchased & Referred Care: PRC may pay for physician and other health professional services, dental services, prescriptions, vision care, physical therapy, hearing aids and mental health services.[21]

Vocational Rehabilitation [22]

• We help people identify their strengths, prepare for jobs, and achieve and maintain employment.
• To Qualify: Have a disability that is holding you back from getting and keeping a job. Be enrolled in a federally recognized tribe. Live in our 5 county service area. Snohomish, Skagit, Whatcom, Island, or San Juan County. Have the desire to work.
