Puyallup

In our Lushootseed language we are known as the spuyaləpabš. The literal translation of this word means “people from the bend at the bottom of the river.” This refers to the many dispersed villages that spanned outward from the mouth of the Puyallup River, near the present day site of the Tacoma Dome. The name spuyaləpabš also became associated with our peoples’ welcoming and generous behavior. Over time the meaning of spuyaləpabš, or Puyallup, has taken on this association. We are one of the many Lushootseed speaking peoples of the northwest. Prior to European settlement, our people lived in villages from the foothills of təqʷuʔmaʔ/təqʷuʔbəd along the rivers, creeks, and prairies to the shores and islands of the Puget Sound.

Departments & Services

Community/Family Services Program [3]

• The intent for the Puyallup Tribe's Community/Family Services Program is to provide assistance to primarily Puyallup Tribal member youth and adults who are in need of drug and alcohol screening, assessment, and referrals to treatment services, focusing on interventions, prevention and outreach services to the Native American community on or near the Puyallup Reservation.

Crisis Assistance Program (C.A.P.) [4]

• The intent of the Crisis Assistance Program is to provide monetary assistance for rent, mortgage or power/utility bills to Puyallup Tribal families in crisis. The CAP staff will assist upon approval and/or coordinate with other programs to ensure comprehensive case management for the success of the families and the program.

Extreme Emergency Assistance [5]

• The intent of the Extreme Emergency Assistance Program is to assist with energy bills for elder Tribal members (55 older) or Tribal members with minor children (up to 18 years of age) who are in the applicant's legal and physical custody; provide monetary assistance when applicant is about to be evicted from primary residence or foreclosure on primary residence; provide assistance with delinquent property taxes; and provide food assistance when electricity has been turned off for 48 consecutive hours. Puyallup Tribe Children's Services will be notified to perform a Health and Safety Welfare Check when applicable.

Medical Emergency Assistance [6]

• The intent of the Medical Emergency Assistance Program is to aid Puyallup Tribal members with monetary assistance when they are hospitalized for one or more days.

Medical Emergency Travel Assistance [7]

• The intent of the Medical Emergency Travel Assistance Program is to assist Puyallup Tribal members with traveling expenses while visiting a relative who is hospitalized for one or more days with an illness or condition.

Childcare Assistance Program [8]

• The intent of the Childcare Assistance Program is to aid Puyallup Tribal members/guardians of Tribal member children (0-12 years of age; or 16 years of age with documented disability) with the cost of full-time, part-time (amount will be prorated), after-school and summer childcare.

Grandview Early Learning Center [10]

• To provide quality and culturally appropriate early childhood care for the Native Children of our community and to provide a safe and nurturing environment for their physical, social, and intellectual growth.

Educational Incentives Program [11]

• The goal of the Education Incentive Program (EIP) is to encourage Tribal member children, youth and adults to work diligently in bringing up and maintaining good grades; to attend school regularly and to improve their academic performance, thereby increasing their knowledge, skills and ability to progress in post-secondary educational institutions.

Higher Education Program [12]

• The intent of the Higher Education Program is to provide Tribal members with tuition, mandatory fees, on-campus room and board, books and supplies, student living assistance (when not living on campus while attending an accredited college, university or vocational college), funding for recertification courses and continuing education classes and gifts to graduates.
