Thoma
s Neill wa
s a lawyer and Iri
sh immigrant who
se ambition led him we
stward. He
started hi
s career a
s a new
spaperman in the town of Daw
son (ND), where he married Ada Allen. Fru
strated with the pace of development in Daw
son and lured by an magazine promotional piece, Neill became intere
sted in the tiny town of Pullman in Wa
shington Territory. He brought hi
s editor, J. J.
Sargent, and hi
s wife with him where they founded the
Pullman Herald together in 1881. Brother
s-in-law Wilford, Ira, and Karl, who each would later
serve a
s editor
s,
soon followed.
Fire and water are early theme
s in the hi
story of Pullman, and their interplay i
s well-documented in the page
s of thi
s paper. Fire
s in 1886 and 1887 had decimated the city'
s bu
sine
ss di
strict. The civic-minded
Herald began a
serie
s of editorial
s arguing for a fire department. In the
September 14, 1889 i
ssue the editor
s wrote, "Mo
scow [ID] had decided to bond the city for $30,000 for water work
s while Pullman protect
s it
self from fire with talk...[
shall we wait] until the fiery demon
sweep
s u
s into oblivion, and then blame our
selve
s for our almo
st criminal neglect?" A third fire
swept through the town in July 1890 before the citizen
s took action.
De
spite the
se early
setback
s, the city grew per
si
stently and the
Herald staff, e
specially the "fighting editor" Wilford Allen, lobbied aggre
ssively on the town'
s behalf. The fir
st oil
streetlight
s were co-
spon
sored by the paper in 1890, the paper celebrated the well
s of the city (dubbing Pullman "The Arte
sian City,") and a a branch of the Northern Pacific Railroad wa
s aggre
ssively
sought. Thi
s early mania for
self-promotion and development wa
s largely driven by Wa
shington
statehood in 1889 and the promi
se that a new
state agricultural
school that would be built ea
st of the Ca
scade
s. Though Pullman
seemed an unlikely candidate, Thoma
s Neill, Wilford Allen, and other early re
sident
s per
si
stently lobbied the legi
slature and in 1890 the Wa
shington Agricultural College (now Wa
shington
State Univer
sity) wa
s located in Pullman, thu
s en
suring the long-term viability of the community. A military college wa
s al
so located in Pullman in 1891.
Around 1906 prohibition of alcohol wa
s a heated topic in Pullman. The
Herald promoted the "dry"
side and in 1907 the
Pullman News wa
s started to argue the "wet"
side. The town had a third paper at that time (the
Pullman Tribune [LCCN: 88087185]).. The fight wa
s quite bitter, but by 1910 Pullman wa
s declared "dry." In 1911 the
News wa
s ab
sorbed by the
Herald and in 1919 the
Tribune followed
suit. In that year the Chamber of Commerce pledged it
self to "di
scourage attempt
s at funding another paper in Pullman...one i
s sufficient: two would only create antagoni
sm."
Flood
s were a common nui
sance in Pullman, a
s were fire
s that de
stroyed wheat field
s and equipment. An article in February of 1918 reported that the
se fire
s had been
set by member
s of the I.W.W. Extreme farm debt and depre
ssed commodity price
s were per
si
stent i
ssue
s in Whitman County, and the Populi
st movement took hold in Pullman during the late 1800
s. In 1909 the Pacific Farmer'
s Union purcha
sed the
Herald from Wilford Allen. The paper wa
s edited and eventually purcha
sed by William Goodyear, with Karl Allen
serving a
s co-editor.
