History

Essay Draft

The Ranch [LCCN: 2007252175] The Ranch was founded by E. H. Libby. Its first issue came off the press of the Yakima Herald[LCCN: sn88085523] on January, 20th, 1894. During the same year Libby, C. P. Wilcox, W. H. Wilcox and George N. Tuesley formed the Yakima Publishing Company and bought the Yakima Republic [LCCN: sn88085525] and also took responsibility for the Ranch. Financial problems triggered frequent transactions in the Yakima publishing community and left the Republic nearly defunct before James and Sperry became owners in early 1896. The Ranch presumably was a victim of the troubled economic climate and frequent changes of ownership; no issues are known to have been printed after August 18, 1894.

The Ranch is among the earliest agricultural journals published in the state of Washington. It encouraged farmers to employ scientific knowledge to their farming practice. It may also have inspired Miller Freeman to found a similar journal, the Ranche and Range[LCCN: 2007252185], in 1897.

newspaper-like, covers the farming industry across the state with backfiles for 1894, and 1897-1914 on 8 reels for a total of 5,050 pages (if I'm reading the paperwork on it correctly). Published in Seattle on a biweekly-then-weekly basis, on newsprint, excellent clarity, tabloid size - gpearson, 2008/09/30 16:01
