History

Essay Draft

The Daily Republican, published from early February to early March, 1896, was the short-lived daily version of the weekly Seattle Republican. This edition was created by Seattle Republican publisher Horace Roscoe Cayton in partnership with James D. Hoge Jr. who had a controlling interest in the daily Seattle Post Intelligencer. Their successful plan outmaneuvered the two rival dailies, the Seattle Daily Times and Seattle Evening News, which had teamed up in an attempt to win the second contract to publish the newly revised City Charter.

The Daily Republican did win the second contract and gave the city a good price to print it. By aiding and abetting the Seattle Post Intelligencer plan, Cayton himself was soon named to be secretary of the Washington State Republican Editorial Associateion. His friendship with Hoge, began when the poor white teenager Hoge arrived in Seattle and was helped by Cayton. Hoge went on to become a important local figure and he repaid Cayton over the years with frequent assistance to Cayton's newspaper.

The daily edition very soon reverted to the weekly Seattle Republican which Cayton continued to publish until its demise in 1913.
