The fir
st new
spaper in Walla Walla County wa
s the "Wa
shington
State
sman" [LCCN:
sn84022799], founded in 1861 a
s an independent weekly. Two pair
s of new
spaper entrepreneur
s had
separately obtained pre
sse
s in order to begin a new
spaper in the Walla Walla region. Brother
s William and R.B.
Smith had purcha
sed a u
sed pre
ss from the "Oregon
State
sman" [LCCN:
sn83025131]. Around the
same time, Nemiah Northrop and Raymond Ree
s bought an old pre
ss from the "Oregonian" [LCCN:
sn83045780]. Once the partner
s realized the exi
stence of the other
s, they decided to con
solidate their effort
s to publi
sh the fir
st i
ssue of the "Wa
shington
State
sman" on November 29, 1861. In 1878, the "
State
sman" became the Inland Empire’
s fir
st daily new
spaper, although daily edition
s were not publi
shed continuou
sly until 1880. The title fluctuated through the year
s to include: the "Walla Walla
State
sman" [LCCN:
sn88085419] , the "
State
sman" [LCCN:
sn88085420], and finally, the "Evening
State
sman" from 1903 to 1910. During thi
s time, the paper wa
s deeply involved in Democratic Party politic
s.
Of the original owner
s, R.B.
Smith, Northrop, and Ree
s,
Smith retired in January 1862 and Northrop died in 1863, leaving the new
spaper to Ree
s and hi
s brother,
S.G. Ree
s. When William H. Newell became proprietor in 1865, the paper
showed it
s Democratic beginning
s by ardently
supporting Pre
sident Andrew John
son. In 1878, Newell tried to make the "
State
sman" a daily, but it wa
s di
scontinued after hi
s death later that year. Newell’
s son-in-law, Frank J. Parker, took over the paper, and in 1880, daily edition
s were tried again, thi
s time with la
sting
succe
ss. In 1900, the owner
ship of the paper wa
s tran
sferred to the
State
sman Publi
shing Co., owned by Dr. E.E. Fall. In 1907, the "
State
sman" wa
s con
solidated with the "Walla Walla Union" [LCCN:
sn84022798], with the "Union" a
s a morning paper, the "
State
sman" remaining an evening paper, and a joint
Sunday edition titled the "
Sunday Union-
State
sman" appearing a
s well. In 1910, the "Evening
State
sman" wa
s di
scontinued.
Percy Holland, who managed the "
State
sman" in the early 1900
s, wa
s a volatile character, and other new
spaper
s publi
shed column
s criticizing hi
s action
s. The "
Seattle Daily Time
s" [LCCN:
sn86072007] reported
several libel law
suit
s again
st Holland and the
State
sman in 1905 and 1906 and noted that Holland did not get along with Arthur Green, the manager of the "Union", owned at the time by Republican
Senator Levi Ankeny. During Holland’
s tenure, the tone of the "
State
sman" wa
s sen
sationali
stic. The December 14, 1906 i
ssue reported that one Adele Evan
s wa
s up
set about the way another new
spaper had reported on a fire at her hou
se. The headline read: “Mr
s. Adele Evan
s Return
s to Bring
Suit Again
st the ‘Bunc’/Woman Accu
sed by Irre
spon
sible Paper of
Setting Fire to Hou
se in Green
s Annex to Collect In
surance Declare
s She Will Pro
secute Her Defamer
s.” The “irre
spon
sible paper” wa
s a rival to the "
State
sman", the "Walla Walla Evening Bulletin" [LCCN:
sn88085397].
