   The Seattle Republican was Seattle's first truly successful African American newspaper. Out of seven black newspapers to appear in the city between 1891 and 1901, it alone survived well into the 20th century. Published between 1895 and 1913, the paper represented the political views of the Republican Party, but not without critical scrutiny by its publisher and editor Horace Cayton Sr. The Seattle Republican aimed for both a national and biracial audience, reporting on events well beyond the borders of Washington State. It covered national political news in some depth, It is a particularly rich source of information concerning the treatment and successes of African Americans all around the country but particularly in the South.
   

A college educated intellectual, Horace Cayton set out to make his paper a strong respecte voice in the rapidly growing city of Seattle. Assisted by his wife Susie Revels (already a published writer), Cayton emphasized the advantages of the booming frontier city, growing prosperous as a supplier to the gold fields in the Klondyke and later in Alaska, and constantly encouraged African Americans to migrate west where opportunity was not curshed by prejudice, or at least not openly denied.

The newspaper iteslef reflected Cayton's optimism and impressive political savvy. As did many black newspaper, Cayton workd closely with the Republican Party and promoted its political agenda when convenient and beneficial to the interests of African Americans as well as whites. Readership was racially mixed with a circulation of ** at its highest point in 19**.

As Seattle grew, so did graft, prostitution and political corruption. The paper took on the growing crime problems and Cayton occasionally paid the price for his honest reporting on powerful local citizens. Arrest, lawsuits and other ploys were used against him, but the general public, once apprised of the facts, usually rallied to his cause.

The Republican often reported on the treatment of blacks in the Southern states, and did not temper its remarks. Cayton spoke for the New Negro, saw education and determination as the keys to the American Dream and constantly promoted the positive accomplishments of African Americans themselves. He never failed to recognize white citizens who treated blacks fairly, and did not hesitate to criticize African Americans who did not live up to his own high expectations.
