Spring Report
Production
We've really picked up
speed with two more batche
s out the door and the next one in the data verfication
stage. Batch_wa_bumping and batch_wa_columbia were
shipped at the end of March and mid-April re
spectively. They have been received at the LC receiving center and are waiting to be approved and uploaded by LC. Newp
spaer title
s that will be uploaded from the
se batche
s include
The Lynden Tribune (
sn88085445) and
The Spokane Press (LCCN: 88085947). Batch_wa_duwami
sh i
s in the hopper to be
shipped within the week and will include a reel of the aforementioned
Spokane Pressand
The Vancouver Independent (LCCN
sn87093109)from the late 1800
s. Neat
stuff from 130 year
s ago!
We received an upgrade of our docWork
s software in February and met the CC
S U.
S.
Sy
stem
s Engineer, Tip Ro
s, at that time for training. It wa
s great to meet Tip and we learned a lot more about the application that doe
s our OCR proce
ssing, metadata management and generation of derivative file
s allowing u
s to meet NDNP requirement
s.

We have four volunteer

s per week of our proce

search time. Karen and Barb, retired
school teacher
s from Olympia, appear every Tue
sday at W
SL and are great fun to work with. They have been
steadily chipping away at the
stack of document

staffing change

s on track.
We're
sad to announce that
Shawn Moriarty, an early member of the NDNP team, ha
s decided to re
sign from W
SL. But the good new

spend more time with her daughter Nina, future digital librarian extraordinaire. They al

A New and Exciting 2012!¶
Happy New Year from WA-NDNP!
We have ambitiou
s goal
s ahead of u
s a
s we're gearing up for
speedy production thi
s year. We are waiting to hear back from LC on the approval of batch_wa_american and already preparing the next for
submi
ssion thi
s month. Title
s included in the fir
st batch are Wenatchee Daily World, Labor Journal and a few i
ssue
s of the
Spokane Pre
ss.
We will have more people helping with the proce
ssing through the addition of two new volunteer
s in Olympia, Colin and Kate, and in the
spring quarter we will add an intern in
Seattle through UW'
s Directed Fieldwork program.
In the meantime, the
staff at W
SL and UW have been truly wonderful in helping me "learn the rope
s" of NDNP detail
s very quickly. We have a new
space for our film reader
s, PC
s and
student
s that allow
s the three of u
s to
stretch our arm
s and meet together in one room at the
same time. :) Thi
s will allow u
s to bring in the DFW
student and collaborate more effectively. It'
s been great meeting people at both work
site
s and
sharing the new
s of the Chronicling America project.
Our NEH and LC contact
s have al
so been warm and welcoming in guiding me through the
standard
s and our proce
ssing
software vendor, CC
S, ha
s been patiently an
swering my many que
stion
s about the tool and keeping everything running
smoothly.
Feel free to
send que

Changes and progress for 2011 from Washington’s National Digital Newspaper Program¶
Hello from the new program coordinator!
I'd like to introduce my
self and give you a brief update on
some of our big change
s over the pa
st year. My name i
s Shawn
Schollmeyer and I am a 2006 graduate of the UW i
School program. My background ha
s included many year
s of library and digital a
sset management experience that I hope will be a great a
sset to the NDNP for Wa
shington. My family ha
s lived in Wa
shington for more than four generation
s which i
s why I am looking forward to promoting thi
s great opportunity to
show our hi
story and development
since pre-
statehood.
2011 ha
s seen a lot of change
s by bringing the docWork
s application in hou
se and with the addition of a new Digital New
spaper Project A
ssi
stant and recent library grad
student, April Martin.
We are already working on the draft for our next grant cycle which will be due in January. We are planning on adding the remaining
Seattle P-I and
Seattle
Star i
ssue
s for the 2012-14 time period to have a well rounded repre
sentation of the
state and population area
s.
While I'm getting up to
speed on the NDNP proce
sse
s I will be adding our update
s to the WIKI. Take a look at the Mile
stone
s table
so
see what we've accompli
shed to date.
Do check back for more update
s over the next few month

Hello to our e
steemed Wa
shington NDNP Advi
sory Committee member
s and
staff,
Here’
s a quick update from Wa
shington’
s National Digital New
spaper Program.
What we’ve accompli
shed:
1. In late
September we relea
sed new
s that 23 title
s with over 115,000 new
spaper page
s went live in Chronicling America (
http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/newspapers/). We
sent relea
se
s by title to media, librarie
s, and archive
s ba
sed on regional intere
st (I’ve attached a copy of the
Seattle
Star relea
se
so you can
see an example).
See a li
st of title
s and more
here.
2. For the mo
st part, our 2008-2010 grant ha
s been completed. For a more detailed report plea
se
see the 2008-2010 final report to NEH:
Final ReportsWhat’
s next:
3. You may have heard that W
SL received word in June that Wa
shington’
s NDNP grant ha
s been renewed for another two year
s. Yay!
4. For the next grant round we decided to licen
se docWork
s from CC
S (our text conver
sion vendor in Germany) in order to bring more of the work in hou
se and allow u
s to digitize other W
SL collection
s in a
similar fa
shion. We’re getting ready to train on the u
se of docWork
s in the next few week
s.
5. We’re in the proce
ss of looking for grant funding that would allow u
s to create a Digital Library Repo
sitory, inge
sting our NDNP title
s with other digital collection
s here at the
State Library. The idea i
s that thi
s would allow better management, pre
servation, and acce
ss to hi
storic new
spaper
s, book
s, map
s, etc. that have been digitized by or in conjunction with the Wa
shington
State Library. Grant money i
s getting much more competitive in the
se tough financial time
s so keep your finger
s cro
ssed for u
s.
Welcome and Thank
s6. Plea
se join me in welcoming Claire Imamura, our new Digital New
spaper Project A
ssi
stant. Claire
started ye
sterday,
she worked for a time at the Ala
ska
State Library and i
s now a full time graduate
student at the UW i
School.
She will be working with me at the Univer
sity of Wa
shington on the next pha
se of the grant.
7. And finally, a big thank
s to Glenda Pear
son and
staff at the Univer
sity of Wa
shington for hou
sing me (part time) and the
student
s working on thi
s project, providing acce
ss to the negative
s they’ve filmed over the year
s, heading the title
s selection committee, and helping to re
search new
spaper title
s. UW ha
s been a great partner in thi
s project and W
SL i
s grateful for it
s collaborative
spirit.
And a
s alway
s, thank you for your
support and feel free to contact me with que

Hello to Wa

I tru

Thi

s ju

s of the progre
ss with Wa
shington’
s National Digital New
spaper Program here at the
State Library.
- We recently released news regarding the 8 Washington titles we have live in Chronicling America (http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/newspapers/). We sent releases based on title to media, libraries, and archives based on regional interest. I’ve attached a general one here for the group.
- We’re also planning a strategy to incorporate these pages and our existing Pioneer Newspapers database into one digital repository and search interface. This may take some time but we’ve begun the initial research.
- With 42,000 pages available online (Chronicling America) and 28,000 more pages delivered and waiting for upload, we are approximately 70% the way through our 100,000 pages. Visit our progress chart for more details: Latest Updates.
- We’ve applied for the 2010-2012 grant cycle and hope to find out by June if we’ve received another two-year grant.

selection by Oct. 24.
Laura and Marly

Sept. 24-25. It wa

some hand
s-on time with film
scanner

some of the vendor

We will be working clo

Greeting
s from overca
st Olympia!
I ju
st want to take a minute to update everyone on where we are in the NDNP project.
We have hired an NDNP Project Coordinator, Laura Robin
son, who will
start work officially on
Sept. 1. Laura ha
s been working on the Wa
shington Rural Heritage project, traveling around the
state doing
scanning and training at rural librarie
s and heritage organization
s to help them convert
some of their unique holding
s. Before that
she worked at the Lo
s Alamo
s National Laboratory in New Mexico developing a quality a
ssurance program for cro
ss-walking and normalization of huge databa
se
s. Needle
ss to
say we are delighted to have her with u
s.
Laura will be
spending part of her time in Olympia and part of it in
Seattle at UW. Once we nail down phone number
s and
such, I’ll
send out her contact information. In the next 2 month
s Laura will al
so be getting married, buying a hou
se and moving –
so
she’ll be very bu
sy!
We have a draft of an RFP for a vendor that i
s currently being reviewed by our contract
s office. We hope to relea
se it
soon and have a vendor nailed down by Nov. I’ve
started working on a contract with UW that will allow u
s to reimbur
se them for film and for
student worker
s.
Glenda i
s working on our preliminary li
st of title
s so we can place our fir
st order
s of film and get
started on the film evaluation and te
sting, a
s well a
s the gathering of metadata.
Laura and I attended the participant
s meeting for NDNP in Wa
shington, DC Aug. 6-8, and had a chance to meet the participant
s from all the other librarie
s and the LC
staff we will be working with. The agenda covered a lot of the nut
s and bolt
s of the project a
s well a
s pre
sentation
s from
several of the continuing awardee
s on project de
sign and trouble
shooting. It wa
s a very po
sitive experience.
We had hoped to al
so attend the metamorpho
si
s08 conference at the Univer
sity of Kentucky which focu
se
s on conver
sion of film to digital, but with the ban on out-of-
state travel that look
s doubtful.
That’
s about it for now – hope you are all having a great
summer!
